Since November 2019, I am a PhD student in contemporary history at the University of Pisa and in cotutelle at the University of Geneva. My research aims to analyse the role of psychiatry and hygiene during the French colonisation of Algeria between 1845 and 1939 from a gender perspective – comparative, relational and intersectional. The thesis – entitled “A hierarchy engraved on bodies. The practice of transferring psychiatric patients from Algeria to the Asile d’Aix-en-Provence (1845-1938)’ – focuses on the practice of transferring Algerian patients (‘natives’ and settlers) to the Asylum of Aix-en-Provence.
